The Emancipation Proclamation shifted the tone and purpose of the Civil War. Using a primary source analysis, pupils consider the significance of the document. A second activity investigates the founding of the United States Colored Troops to aid in the war effort. A writing exercise then allows scholars the opportunity to practice their writing and analysis skills as an exit ticket.

Instructional Ideas

  • Analyze the Emancipation Proclamation using questions to discover the significance of the document
  • Use activities to build vocabulary and have students make flashcards of unknown words

Classroom Considerations

  • Part of a series on the Civil War, but it works independently of other lessons as well
  • Lesson neglects to explore the motivations of Lincoln or why the document only applied to Confederate states or racism faced by members of the United states Colored Troops (USCT)

Pros

  • Resource includes supplemental vocabulary and scaffolded analysis questions
  • Primary source is appropriately curated for younger learners

Cons

  • Link to PowerPoint does not work
