Is it possible to combine many voices into one national identity? That is the question addressed by the unit module “My Part of the Story: Exploring Identity in the United States.” The unit consists of six lessons that ask high schoolers to examine what it means to be an American. They begin by considering the factors they feel are essential to their identity. Young historians also research the connections between their personal histories, the history of the United States, and the importance of giving voice to all immigrant stories. The module is designed to be used to introduce a course in United States History, Language Arts, or Civics.
