Bacterial Keratitis is a serious eye condition that is caused by a bacterial infection and subsequent inflammation of the cornea of the eye. It is a condition caused by several pathogenic bacteria including staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa and klebsiella. This condition is a serious complication of contact lens use, as the prevalence of contact lens use is associated with the incidence of bacterial keratitis. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors for getting bacterial keratitis, including several risk factors related to contact lens use. We also discuss the pathophysiology behind the condition, the signs and symptoms of bacterial keratitis including complications such as vision loss and corneal scarring, and finally we discuss how clinicians diagnose and treat this condition.
