It all started with the brief experience of Hua Guofeng and the game-changing mentality change brought about by Deng Xiaoping. Compared to Mao's entirely ideology-driven approach, Deng Xiaoping had a much more pragmatic perspective of what China is and what it needs to become. Future leaders such as Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping basically built on the foundation Deng Xiaoping established and, from many perspectives, China as we know it today can be considered the vision of Deng Xiaoping. Of course, leaders such as Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping had perspectives of their own but in the absence of Deng Xiaoping's game-changing \"it doesn't matter if the cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice\" perspective when it comes to the future of the Chinese economy... let's just say it's difficult to think about what China would have looked like today.
