I could see that my dad was sad about it and I wanted to get to the truth of that, but I also wanted to get to the fact that I so loved that jacket because when it turned up and I put it on, it felt kind of special. That is how I have tried to express it with repeating I wore and I wore and wore it. I wanted to say how special it was. You could find a poem like this quite easily, you could talk to your mum, dad, grandparents or anybody in your family and listen to what they say, you think about it and listen to what you feel and you can get to a truth. You can use words like sad, happy or you can tell the truth sometimes by repeating things. Sometimes in poems you don’t have to say everything so the person listening or the reader can get the truth by the way you said it and this one does it through repetition and with the mystery of the man who was left behind, so you could do something like that.” My father came to England from another country My father’s mother came to England from another country but my father’s father stayed behind. So my dad had no dad here and I never saw him at all. One day in spring some things arrived: a few old papers, a few old photos and – oh yes – a hulky bulky thick checked jacket that belonged to the man I would have called ‘Grandad’. The Man Who Stayed Behind. But I kept that jacket and I wore it and I wore it and I wore it till it wore right through at the back CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Re-read the poem together and consider what Michael says about why he used repetition. Did the children notice this? Do they think this was effective in making them feel the love he had for the jacket? What else in the poem focuses their attention on his love for the jacket? Look at howhe juxtaposes: a few old papers, a few old photos with and - oh yes - a hulky bulky thick checked jacket Ask pupils to think of something, someone or somewhere that is special to them. How can they write about it in a poem that shows the reader how they truly feel or felt about it or them without directly telling them - in the way Michael Rosen does here? It might help to visualise the object, person or place first in their mind’s eye, and then write down their thoughts and feelings before building their ideas into a poem.
